I have noticed that diabetics struggle with the ability to manage diabetes due to excessive hunger which can often lead to poor diet choices that are not appropriate for them; however thanks to the new Glucerna® Hunger Smart™ Shakes now it so much easier for them to control the excessive hunger. Let me share a little bit of background information about why managing diabetes is important to me. Ever since I was a little girl, my father’s mother had Type 2 Diabetes. It was always a struggle for her to manage the disease, mainly due to wanting to eat all of the things that she had always consumed growing up. She loved sweets and for diabetics, that is just not something that does not work well with your body if it is high in sugar. Diabetes is a life-long disease that affects the way that your body handles glucose, which is a type of sugar that is in your blood. That is why my grandmother had issues whenever she would over consume certain food items. I was always interested in diabetes due to seeing first hand how it can affect a person living with the disease, which is one of the reasons why I went into the Dietetic field. I always wanted to help those who are living with diabetes better manage their diet so they can feel better. So once I was given this opportunity to create a meal plan to help manage diabetes through the diet with Glucerna Hunger Smart Shakes, I knew that I had to do it!
I purchased my Glucerna Hunger Smart Shakes at my local Walmart shopping center. Walmart actually has a deal going on right now: Buy any 2 large packs of Glucerna and get up to $3 off. You can see in the image below the exact spot of where I found the shakes. The locations of the products were near the pharmacy in Walmart. I realize that most WalMart’s have a different layout but I do believe that if you either ask the pharmacist or a Walmart employee they will be able to direct you to the exact location. Walmart is my one stop shop for everything pretty much, so I was thrilled that they even carried products like Glucerna so that you can buy them while grocery shopping.
Glucerna is a great product that is made by the brand Abbott as supplementation for Diabetics, please use under medical supervision. I previously worked in a clinical setting in Nutrition and we always provided our Diabetic patients with the option of consuming a Glucerna supplement to help manage their diet. A supplement like this shake can really make a difference when controlling your diabetes, so I highly encourage speaking with your Doctor or Registered Dietitian about this product to see if it could help you manage diabetes. Glucerna Hunger Smart Shakes have 15 grams of protein to control your hunger cravings during the day, which can hopefully lead to weight loss that is needed to manage diabetes. The product also includes CARBSTEADY, which includes slowly digestible carbohydrates that will help control blood sugar spikes throughout the day. The way that it works is by consuming 1 shake for one meal in combination with two other well-balanced meals.
After learning more about the new Glucerna Hunger Smart Shakes it inspired me to write a blog post that covered a meal plan that will help manage diabetes for my readers. Nutrition is something that I value and take very seriously considering my profession. I am happy to share my meal planning tips in hopes that it will help you manage your Diabetes better.
Diet tips to help manage Diabetes:
Tip #1: Consume complex carbohydrates that can help control your hunger and manage diabetes due to the longer process of breaking them down in your body which allows glucose to be absorbed at a slower rate. The slower rate of glucose absorption will help manage your blood sugar levels, which will make you feel so much better during the day. Some food sources that are consider complex carbohydrates are: whole-grain foods, apricots, plums, pears, most vegetables, legumes and low-fat dairy products.
Tip #2: Fiber is your new best friend. Fiber helps us feel fuller for a longer period of time, which can help lead to management of blood sugar levels. Some good sources to try would be: Fruits with peel, sweet potatoes with skin, legumes, whole-grain products, and fiber fortified cereals and brown rice.
Tip #3: Make sure you are consuming an adequate amount of Magnesium in your diet. Magnesium helps breakdown carbohydrates during digestion so it is important to consume enough to help out this process. Some food sources to try include: spinach, tofu, pumpkin seeds, lentils, halibut, almonds, and broccoli.
Tip #4: Low Glycemic Index Foods are the better fit for you! Sources such as beans, lentils, whole-grain bread, green beans, raw carrots, lettuce, etc. are great options that have a low Glycemic Index that will help you control diabetes.
Tip #5: Add in more Omega-3 fatty acids to your diet. Food items such as salmon, fish oil supplements, walnuts, soybeans, flaxseed, tuna, etc. will help decrease the inflammation that can later cause heart disease; which is a common disease that is developed in people with Diabetes.
