Every woman has concerns when it comes to taking care of her skin. We all have questions about the best way to take care of our skin to prevent blemishes and aging over time. So today I have teamed up with Dove, their intelligent Dermatologist, Dr. Alicia Barba, and Simply Stylist to answer skincare questions that every woman wants to know. I am always concerned about my skin and want to know the best way to maintain beautiful skin, even in my underarm area. We often neglect the underarm area mainly because we feel that it doesn’t need as much attention as other parts of the body. Well my friends, that is not the case. I have always used Dove deodorant to take care of the area because it works the best for me. I was so thrilled to learn more about Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant and even try it out.
Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant offers a full 48 hours of odor and wetness protection, plus its NutriumMoisture formula leaves your underarms feeling soft and smooth. One of the issues that I often have with my underarms is dry skin and irritation after shaving, which I am pretty sure every woman deals with. I can honestly say that after shaving and trying out this Dove antiperspirant, I could tell a difference in my underarm area, it was so unreal. I use the Dove Advanced Clear Tone because it helps with dark marks and restores skin to its natural tone. No more issues with redness or irritation, all thanks to this fantastic product. I was able to ask Dr. Barba about taking care of my underarms, as well as other skincare questions I had. Check out my Q&A with Dove Dermatologist, Dr. Alicia Barba, for some professional skin-care tips.
Our questions answered:
What should women look for in an antiperspirant?
A good antiperspirant is an essential part to every woman’s beauty routine. Look for an antiperspirant that goes beyond odor and wetness protection. Not only does Dove Advanced Care offer 48 hour protection, it provides added skincare benefits with its NutriumMoisture formula for softer, smoother underarms.
What’s an area of the body that’s often neglected when it comes to skin care?
When people think about skincare, they typically first think about their face. It’s important to remember to take care of your entire body, including your neck, chest, hands, feet and underarms! It is not unusual for women in their 40s to come to my clinic complaining about the skin on their neck, chest and hands.
What’s the best way to help alleviate underarm issues like dry skin and irritation?
If you’re experiencing underarm issues you are not alone. Nearly 2 in 3 women report having some kind of underarm issue, whether it be dry skin, red marks, uneven skin tone or irritation. Irritation under the arms are often caused by friction and occasionally by inflammation. Friction from underarm skin rubbing on itself or on clothes and friction from aggressive shaving are often culprits, as is overzealous waxing. To remedy irritation under our underarms, treat the area under the arms as you would other sensitive areas on your body. It’s important to use a deodorant that contains a moisturizing formula that can soothe your skin and help alleviate these problems.
What should women look for in a facial cleanser?
Look for a facial cleanser that is adapted to your skin type and is not overly drying. Cleansers, especially the evening cleanser, should do a good job at removing dead skin cells, makeup and sunscreen so that pores do not get clogged however it should not over-strip the skin and excessively remove natural moisturizers, proteins and lipids that help the skin maintain its protective barrier. If you are acne prone, look for cleansers with salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. For the morning, use a very gentle cleanser. Remember, you did a good cleanser the night before. There are not many impurities from the night before. Dove Beauty Bar is perfect for the morning routine as it hydrates while cleansing.
What is the best way to prevent blemishes and help heal them?
The best way to prevent blemishes is by removing all makeup at night with a good cleanser and minimizing foods with a high glycemic index and foods high in dairy. If you are truly acne prone, consider using adapalene 0.1% gel at night, now over the counter.
If you have a large blemish that you have to heal quickly, the best is to get a same day appointment with your dermatologist and have it injected with a dilute amount of cortisone solution. This is magic. If you cannot make it into the derm, blend a small amount of OTC benzoyl peroxide 10% with OTC hydrocortisone 1% cream. Apply at night over a large pimple. This is better than toothpaste!
